Patlanalan is a remote community in Puebla, known mostly for the lagoon in the center of the community and its coffee production. Coffee is farmed all along the sloping mountains that surround the lagoon by smallholder farmers, and family labor is used for all of their work during harvest. Most producers live in the lower area of town near the lagoon, far from their farms, so all coffee is transported by mule.

This particular lot has given us notes of cream soda, bright red cherry, and a taste of tootsie rolls that we haven’t been able to shake. Coffees from Mexico are undeniably classic in presentation, but with lots like this that carry a story of continual improvement in quality and investment in such a remote place, there is a special depth in a coffee that seems to be, at least on the surface, so familiar.
